• annotating music magazines with the correct terminology. (mostly words i didnt know before)

e.g.  

Banner:  Front page headline which goes across the full width of the page.

Lure:  a small section of a story is printed on the front page and the full story or interview is advertised as continuing inside.

Masthead:  the title at the top of the front cover or front page which identifies the newspaper or magazine.

Sans-serif:  a typeface without a bar or ‘foot’

Serif:  the little bars added to the ends of letters in a typeface.

Strapline:  headline in smaller font appearing over main headline.

• The first and last page are divide into three colums for the text. On the second page there is only one column due to there being an establising shot of solange.
• Each Column is Left Aligned
• Cohesive colour palette used across the feature, blue , grey and white. This creates cohesion with the rest of the magazine as its al similar colours.
• Serif font used throughout the article
• Quotes are placed in larger fonts to the rest of the article, so readers focus on it.

key features of  language / style Within Article:

• The opening lines sets a contriversal enviroment. “lets start with the obvious …. the houston native has been repeatedly hit with the same question, ” how do you deal with endles comparison to your more famous celebrated sister?”"
• This question is immediatly followed by an answer in action A MIDDLE FINGER. This  makes us want to read on to See if she does anything else unruly. so it entices us to carry on. this will definately be aimed at their target audience.

The contents page for the November 08 issue of the VIBE magazine differs from the cover page in the way that the contents look traditional and the front cover isn’t. The colours from the front page also differ from the colours of the contents page. On the contents page the colours are grey, black and white, which is quite boring and serious where as on the front cover it was blue, red and white. The layout is quite conventional unlike the front cover page. The font style is sans serif which is better as it’s easier to read compared to serif. Subheadings example features are put here to allow or help readers to navigate better through out the magazine.

The VIBE magazine contents are divided in six sections Feature show information, Fashion shows the current styles, Departments shows the editors letter and other write ins, Seen shows what happened lately on TV, Vstyle also shows the current styles and Volume shows the latest music, which are also split into three pages. But the main sections are features, volume and now. Features are longer than a news story with more background information and a more individual view point such as interviews. The sub headings (features) is in a larger font than the others writing and is in serif font. The smaller text is also serif. The headline “tipping point” shows a brief lure. This allows are encouraging readers to read it but more importantly it allows you to find out what they want to read this gives the reader more of an insight into the contents of the feature.

All the subheadings and relevant pages aligned to the right of the right of the page except for the third page where it aligned to the left. The image of Barak Obama draws particular attentions to the tipping point feature article as it’s about him. The image is a mid shot this also shows a different side to Barak Obama compared to the front cover his shown happy. His wearing a grey, white and black suit which matches the colours and layout of the page.

The second contents page is black and white with the contents on the right hand side. The image is also in black and white it shows Russell Westbrook who is a basketball player winking or squinting with a serious face and it’s a close up. The third contents page is also in black and white with the contents on the left hand side the image is also black and white and it’s an advertorial.

At the bottom of the third page there is extra information, websites on where to find more information about the magazine. Like for example vibe.com/politics obviously shows the politics side of the magazine. And they also have connections with other websites such as myspace, twitter, youtube etc…

The front cover of the November 08 issue of the VIBE shows that the special edition is layout in a way to support politics and show that it’s siding with the democratic point of view. The front cover looks more like a political magazine rather than music magazine. This is due to there being Barak Obama on the cover page who is the president elect and not an R’ n ‘B artist.

These issues of the VIBE show three main colors which are conventional for magazine covers but these colors have a meaning behind it. The colors are white blue and red. The masthead is on top of the image which makes the brand identity of the magazine easily noticed by the customers / audience. The V is blue in a black box and it resembles a tick made on the ballot box when voting and the IBE is red. The reason behind VIBE picking these colors is to celebrate America as the flag is the same color (white blue and red). The masthead is the largest font on the page, and it’s also in sans serif which makes it legible to more people than if it was to be serif.

The reason why they put Barak Obama on the front cover is to influence people to vote for him. The target audience is aged 18-34, who buys hip-hop or rap music or listens to some sort of urban programming, around 50% are in education either college or univerty,90% are single and predominately African American / black race. These are people who are legal to vote and also most likely to vote for him so they are targeting the right people.

The strap line says “Historic collector’s edition” the reason why they said historic is because Barack Obama becoming the first black president is a day never to be forgotten and will go down in history. So they are celebrating his victory. The banner is Obama and is in big font and In blue. The cover lines show 99 stars names put in order of importance of endorser. They are in Five groups all in sans serif but put in small font e.g. lil bossie, small bold e.g. gym class heroes, medium font e.g. will.i.am, medium bold e.g. common large, red e.g. Jay z.

The quote “The best rapper ALIVE” targets and grabs the audiences attention and lures them to buy it to find out who it could possibly be.  The layout of this issue is very different and not traditional at all. The magazine layout seems to be much clustered and the only separation is by font size and colour not by space. Everything is on the left (text) and the image is on the right. It does not follow the style of a conventional magazine. The image is usually in the centre and is usually a medium close up or occasionally a establishing shot. But this shot is an extreme close up but only half of the face is shown. I cannot asses his body language but we can assume the photo is taken in a portrait orientation. It shows his face in great detail. This allows me to read his facial expressions effortlessly. It shows a man that takes the job and elections seriously and shows determination to win, which are just a few things about being a president. The fact that his eyes a looking straight ahead gives us the feeling that he is looking at us directly. This emulates a relationship with the audience.

There is a lure on the cover and it’s in sans serif font, it says “Dear VIBE readers, I am running for president to take this country to a new direction but I can’t do it alone. I need you” this is a fraction of the letter inside to encourage people to purchase it.

The fact that VIBE put Barack Obama on the front cover shows they are strong democrats and so are their readers because if must of them weren’t they wouldn’t put him there. And they can convert other republicans’ audience to democrats.

VIBE follows some of the conventions of an R’n’B genre music magazines the figure expression of the Barak Obama and the choice of strap lines help identify the genre and attract the target readers.
